Depends on your state, but most states allow private sells of firearms. You do not need to go to a FFL dealer and pay to have a BATF 4473 form filled out. You can generate two (2) bill of sales and list the make, model and serial number. List the person you are selling the firearm to along with verifying their identity via their drivers license. Both of you sign the bill of sales and you keep one and he keeps one. This way you have a way to prove you sold the firearm. Of course if there was no paperwork completed when you purchased the firearm then there is no record of you owning it.
You don’t have to do the bill of sale but it is always good practice to do that, whether it is a firearm or something else.
Uh, you just sell it. No need to do anything. If you want to you can write up a bill of sale yourself for your own personal records. No need to go through a dealer unless you want to do consignment and I don’t see the point in that and no need to notify the police or any government agency.
If there was no FFL, then it was before 1968. In most states, you need to be reasonably sure the buyer is a legal buyer, and you can sell your firearm the same way as you’d sell a lawnmower or any other tool. If you’re someplace like CA, then you may have to go through a dealer. Check laws locally. The NRA-ILA website listing state regulations can be of some help.
