Don’t bother with a handgun. Every criminal in the world knows the sound of a slide shotgun. You don’t even have to ever load it. Just pull the slide really hard if you ever hear anyone in your house. ONLY ONCE THOUGH or they will know it is unloaded. When they hear it they will be shaking their pants leg as they are running out.

you should go to your local gun range and try out all kinds, familiarize yourself i recomend a 44 with an 8" barrel, very loud and intimidating. excellent stopping power. but you have to get what fits you. thats why i say go shoot some and see what you like
A shotgun is better for home defense.
I have a 357 magnum but they are a little pricey.I also have a 22 pistol,not very expensive.Try a pawn shop to get a good price.If you are not that familiar with guns then please take a course to learn what you should & shouldn’t do.Always handle a gun as if it were loaded,even if you’re sure it isn’t.Take care.
The springfield XD-9 is a good weapon, but if you are just using it for home defense I would get a Benelli, or Remington 12 gauge shotgun with double 00 buckshot. That will run you around three hundred while the XD will be about $500
I bought my wife a 6" barrel .22 cal double action revolver for self defense. it cost right at $100 and is fool proof, just pull the trigger and out comes noise and lead. You don’t really need any thing bigger or fancier. We like to go "plinking" and we can shoot all day long for $5. Besides, you wouldn’t be able to hear for a week if you fired a .45 in the house.
A gun or any other type of weapon can be taken away from you and used against you. Would be a shame to die by your own weapon. Be peaceable man. Don’t associate with the bad guys. Maybe you should move to a better neighborhood.
