I purchased a handgun many years ago, which I still own, however I can’t find a copy of my permit / license anymore. Where can I get a copy of this in case I ever have to show proof that I’m the legal owner of the firearm? I live in California.

try asking the agency where you had to apply for the permit, perhaps? at least that would get you pointed in the right direction
