I’m filling out my pistol license application and I have some questions.
Question 38 reads: Have you ever been terminated/discharged from any employment or the armed forces for cause?
-I have definitely been discharged from a previous job but for reasons such as excessive lateness. Would I answer NO to this question?
Also, my fiance and I are recovering drug addicts. It specifically asks on the form if there has ever been a history of drug use. 4 years ago, we both changed our lives and no longer drink or use drugs. Is this going to negatively impact the application??
When my fiance quit using drugs, he checked himself into a mental hospital willingly for 2 days. This is also a question on the application. How will this affect the application?
I would never lie on the application! Was just wondering if these things would affect the decision.
I live in NY by the way!
Just to make myself clear about something. I got a rude e-mail from someone suggesting that I was going to be ‘buying a gun for my mentally ill fiance’. This is not the case, we are filling out our own separate applications.

I am retired military and have carried concealed in many states over the past 30+ years.
The term, "for cause" in this sense means removed from your job or positon for embezzlement, theft, mis-use of public office, mis-use of public funds, or bribary. If you were, "removed for cause’ you sure as heck would know about it – and so would anyone else who reads the news papers.
As for the drug use……. I am a former military drug and alchohol councilor. If you have been arrested and convicted of this drug use – then you should probably not apply until a few more years have passed – and you have a proven good track record. However, if you have not run afoul of the law – who’s to say what? I’ve known little old ladies that took a nip of cough syrup a bit too much and considered themselves addicts – I certainly did not. And we have no shortage of folks who belive cigarette smoking is drug additction. If there is no documentation – it really never happened, did it?
Good luck. Hope this helps.
Do not know what state you are in but it really makes no difference.
You need to answer questions truthfully and accurately. No matter if it has or does not have an impact on the application. some states allow some stuff with further proof. like a mental health discharge letter.
For cause includes continual lateness.
Most ask about mental hospitalization and many differentiate between voluntary and involuntary but they all ask.
So you BF would have to answer yes. Just as he will have to answer yes to drug use history.
You should answer yes if you have been terminated/discharged.
I don’t know how those answers will effect your application (not sure what state you are in either). But by putting truthful answers you are alot better off than if you would have lied and they found out.
YOU OK THERE
