I own a full size 9mm, and I’m thinking of obtaining a pistol permit in order to carry concealed. Of course, carrying such a large weapon concealed would be a bit of a trick, so it’s probably going in my purse (which I’m way more protective over than the average woman).
I’ve got some pretty good reasons for carrying concealed and most of it stems from my long solo drives to/from scuba diving sites. I spend a lot of time on the road, at all hours of the day and night, and I’d feel better with a means to defend myself.
My big question is to all the various police officers out there: If I am carrying concealed, and I get pulled over for some odd reason, what do you expect from me? Would you want to know immediately that I carry a firearm? How would you expect me to behave? (i.e. both hands on the steering wheel, keys out of the ignition, etc).
Basically, I don’t want some freaked out cop drawing down on me because he saw the butt of my pistol as I rummaged for my driver’s licenses.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you retrieve if from your purse at a moments notice? Can a criminal snatch your purse? Look into a nice leather fanny pack. Yeah, old ladies at Disney World wear them, but they’ll work easier for a woman. And you should inform the officer that you have a permit and firearm.
trivia—i think they charge to much to get a permit. it’s up to bout $300 now.. for the one day class it’ bout $100 and the background check it’s $150 and then something else…like i said–"trivia"…..like the others have said—–hands on the wheel and the first thing i would say is that " i have a concealed weapons permit"
In my state, if you have a concealed weapon, and you come into contact with law enforcement, you are required to immediately declare that you are carrying a weapon (in a non-threatening manner). The cop will usually ask you where it is and make sure you do not reach for it.
But if you carry it in your purse, it’s not going to do you much good. I think you’re being extremely paranoid. Carrying a weapon is a very dangerous thing to do, especially without proper training. I’d suggest you get a can of pepper spray or something.
If CCW was so dangerous why haven’t we heard about the "dangerous consequences" on the news. I have not heard about a rash of cops killing permit holders because they drew down on them. I have not heard about people being shot because someone bumped their car door… What kinda crap are you listening too. 48 states have some sort of Conceal Carry laws…Do a little research.
Sorry about that Rita. There are two firearms I like. The Springfield Armory XD and the Taurus Millennium Pro. Depending how you want to carry be it purse, holster, fanny-pack you should make a choice. If you stick in in a purse you want to be sure it has a thumb safety or is a double action only revolver. This way it cannot be fired by accident.
You also want to be sure the gun you choose fits your hand perfectly and has the best and smoothest trigger pull for you.
Basically go to a gun shop and see what they got. Be sure to ask alot of questions and be sure of the answer. Also in order to get your ccw you will have to take a course. If the instructor is good he will go over the what to do’s if you get stopped by an officer, laws in your area, how to handle different situations. Also read and re-read the laws. Be certain of them. And again ask questions.
As a police officer, I will answer your questions… First, no one can give you a solid answer because the laws vary from state to state so check with your local or state law enforcement about what the concealed permit covers, don’t rely on anyone else.
As far as if you are stopped, you are on the right track. Turn on the interior light at night, open your window and leave your hands on the steering wheel. Let the officer know that you have a concealed weapon and that you also have a permit to carry it and then follow the instructions of the officer and you should be fine. Again, depending on the laws of your state and how experienced the officer is, they may look at your permit and thank you for letting them know. Some may ask you to hand the weapon over for their safety until the stop is completed and others may just ask you to step from the vehicle, separating you from the weapon until after the stop.
Again, depending on the state, you can also take the chance and not tell the officer that you have a weapon on you, but don’t be surprised that if they see yours, you may see theirs!
I am not a Police Officer, but first I recommend that you have a valid concealed carry permit before you carry any sort of firearm.
Second I recommend that you carry your driver’s license, registration and concealed carry permit i a location that is different from the location where you keep your firearm.
Third: Get firearms training from a certified firearms instructor before you carry a concealed firearm. Part of your training will be how to handle the circumstance where you are stopped by the Police.
If you have a weapon on you, the best thing to do, if you get pulled over, is to notify the officer that you have a weapon on your person. Not in a threatening way, you don’t want to shout it out, so he thinks you might be going for it. Just let him know. In most states, you have to have your LTC on your person as well, so be prepared to show the LTC to him. Keep both hands on the wheel until he tells you otherwise. If it is dark out, put on the interior light, so that he can see in.
Just on a side note, carry it in a holster on your body, not in your purse. It isn’t considered a "secure" place to put it, no matter how protective you are of your purse. In most states, it’s illegal to leave it in your purse.
I had a permit myself for some years, and before you conceal, make sure that the permit you’re getting allows that.
Depending on the state you’re in, the "permits" you get don’t always allow you to actually conceal the weapon as much as they allow you to carry it.
If you get pulled over and feel the need to rummage for your license, first inform the officer that 1.) You have a firearm, and 2.) you have a permit for it. Keep your movements slow and not sudden, and you should be fine.
No policeman would shoot at you unless you had your gun aimed at him or some other citizen.
