In most US States, being able to have a gun carry permit you must be 21 years old or older and pass qualifications; background check, mental illness history, and so forth.
Whether or not you have a gun carrying license most college campuses ban all firearms.
Do you think that students with the proper license and qualifications should be allowed to carry their guns on campus? If they can get a gun permit (which are not easy to come by in some states) should they be allowed to carry them on campus since they are allowed to carry them on their person elsewhere?
Do you honestly see more or less problems arising if college students were to be allowed to carry concealed firearms?
Hunting, shooting and target practise are some of the most popular pastimes in the USA, but make that you learn all about the rules and regulations regarding firearms and their safe use.

They should be allowed to. It is not only a Constitutional right, but a God-given right that we are able to defend ourselves from people who wish to do us harm.
I don’t know about allowing students to carry guns at elementary and high school, but college students should be allowed as should all qualified teachers.
A lot of people (alexpirwin, Jason S, and Andrew K on this question) don’t realize that no state or county has experienced an increase in crime and/or accidental gun deaths after passing concealed carry laws (the only exceptions are when the rate is already going up and concealed carry usually slows the increase). If you live in any state (except Illinois and Wisconsin) there is something like a 5-20% chance, depending on where you live, that someone in the room with you in a public place is armed. Never has a concealed carry law lead to an increase in multiple shootings. People who are willing to go through the process of legally obtaining the proper permits and qualification tend to be responsible and serious about the situation. People who are that irresponsible tend to carry regardless of what the law says in the first place.
There are actual examples of students using personal firearms to stop a shooting on a college campus. On January 16, 2002, at the Appilachian School of Law, Peter Odighizuwa opened fire and killed 3 people. Before he could more people, he was subdued by students (two of which where armed). Tracy Bridges and Mikael Gross each went to their cars and retieived their weapons. They both then held the assailant at gunpoint while he was subdued.
If students were allowed to carry on campus, less people might have died. If some students were armed, the Virginia Tech massacre migh have not happened.
Andrew K makes mention that any legitmate campus has police 24/7. They may or may not be true (you havn’t been to every college in the US, so you don’t know). Even if the police are on campus, they can’t be everywhere all the time. They can’t be in every room or every area. Besides, I have been to several legitimate college campuses and seen very little if any police. I was at the University of Illinois for a football game and didn’t see but a few cops directing traffic. I was once at Notre Dame for a tour and didn’t see any police. There goes that theory.
Many people who answer this seem to underestimate college students. Remember, steroetyping is wrong. Most college students are not the hard partying, hard drinking morons you seem to think they are.
If you can give a solid reason as to why a college student on-campus would need a firearm, I would support this.
As I see no purpose to have one, no.
Don’t say for defense, because any legitimate college campus is heavily policed 24/7.
I believe any person who is legally able to carry a concealed weapon should be able to do so on a college campus. That being said, I also believe that a PRIVATE university has the right to set its own rules. Public universities, though, should be treated as public property.
I don’t see why college students should not be allowed to carry a gun. I would think with the campus massacres that have taken place that being on a college campus would make you statistically significantly more likely to be murdered.
I would put up a stink if I were still in college. I think your rights on campus should be no different than your rights off campus.
i think that if u meet the requiernments to carry then yes u should be able to have it on a college campus as well as anywhere eles. however am a big supporter of guns and as soon as i am 21 wil have one with me at all times. i have seen and heard of crazy things happening that if i was there would like a gun so i plan on having one. people need to relieze guns arnt bad. they are good when carried by the right people who know how to use them.
I can foresee a lot of dead students at frat parties. There’s nothing like a well-armed kegger, I always say.
Think they should be able to carry firearms.
Many already do.
If they legally possess a license to carry a concealed firearm, then I have no problem with them having them on campus. The state that they live in has no problem with them carrying one in a mall, why shouldn’t they be allowed to carry one at school, where there is a history of violence? You have to remember, the police are not legally obligated to protect you. Ulitmately, it is everyones individual responcibility to protect themselves.
I DO NOT think guns should be allowed in any schools i worked for years in a university and i think people who carry guns will some day use them even if they don’t intend to. keep guns locked up where they belong use them only for hunting, protection for your family ; but not in the school system use the time to study about how many students have been killed by guns in schools by children as young as 6 years old stop it now.
most drink to much and then the shooting will begin no
I don’t see anywhere going with this on con and pro controversy issues. I don’t think it would solve the problems by having the gun to come to College campus. Because what if the young person got so nervously handle the gun and shoot the wrong person by accidentally facing the shooter if that happens. It would change the person’s life completely. NO win on both sides here.
In my time and day, I was not even thinking about how safe for me to come to my University. I walked freely, and much more. It is just sad to see the culture had changed some and things seems change the generation the way they look at.
I believe the more expose with Medias, movies, and Reality shows, much more, it seems encourage the crazies to decide to use the schools to become the targets instead the other places. Remember the Columbia in Colorado years ago which was kind first before become more in others, It seems that way to me. I don’t know how you feel about what I have thought. At least its just my opinion.
I see more problems. Background checks/mental illness history checks meaning NOTHING in my opinion.
People, that is the reason it is called conceal carry. No one knows you have it until they decide to pull a gun on you. 48 states in the Union have Conceal Carry or CCW. If you live in any state other than WI and IL you have probably walked passed dozens of people everyday carrying a sidearm and not even know it.
I am definitely for any student or staff member that has a conceal carry permit to be able to carry their handgun concealed for the protection of themselves and others.
If even just 5 or 6 of the 32 Virginia Tech victims had been able to carry there would not have been 32 victims.
Gun Free Zones only work when everyone follows the law not just the law abiding…But someone willing to kill someone in cold blood is not going to stop when he sees a Gun Free Zone…Instead he sees easy victims that cannot defend themselves.
Think about it…a bad guy has one or two guns pointed at others…those same others have gun pointed back at him or her…

"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Can it be supposed that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity … will respect the less important and arbitrary ones … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants, they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." — Thomas Jefferson
Completely IN FAVOR of that. I’m definitely with Headtate and bobbo 342 on this one. Are we to believe mass murderers keep shooting up gun free zones because they just can’t read? Don’t think so. It’s time for people to wake up and see how much harm it really causes to restrict gun owners’ rights. Laws only exist for people who have an interest in obeying them and not everyone does.
